![]() White is the classic favorite and I needed it in this house. Add on the Elkay strainers and the famous InSinkErator garbage disposal and I am one happy home chef! I knew I didn’t want a stainless sink in this house but loved ours in our last house! It’s not uncommon to see a copper, stainless or bronze farmhouse sinks too. (One for dirty, one for clean or drying!) A farmhouse sink can handle the mess and prep of large loads while maintaining a nostalgic feel. I went with a 33″ farmhouse double basin fireclay kitchen sink. A white apron sink is the signature feature of modern farmhouse kitchens, in my opinion. ![]() The Elkay fireclay, apron sinks are just stunning. I knew a year before designing the kitchen which sink I wanted. We also did matching matte black Baldwin hinges and modern Kwikset handles throughout the house. We got 7-inch pulls for lowers, 9-inch ones for uppers and some 12-inch ones for the big drawers! I love the statement the big drawer pulls have against the white shaker cabinets. We compromised on a simple design with a bit of a bold look in the Sanctuary collection from Top Knobs. I kept gravitating to the cup pulls and half-dome pulls but my husband couldn’t warm up to those. Simple pulls or knobs are popular in modern farmhouse kitchens. Don’t be afraid to mix metals in terms of finishes in your kitchen, as most designers say! Hardware And the Hinkley Somerset flush mount for the attached powder bathroom was a perfect to bring in bit of brass. For my big picture window, I wanted to bring in the warmth of a farmhouse kitchen looking out on the farm (or lake) with the Hinkley Arti wall sconces. Big and bold with functionality yet still having a simple modern style. The Hinkley Argo lights were my EASIEST selection. My pendant lights are my kitchen statement piece. My husband could have easily done a contemporary design with modern frameless cabinets and rustic farmhouse lights. Paired some modern Shaker cabinets with traditional brass light fixtures. I went with a blend of modern and farmhouse. My whole goal in the kitchen was to balance the clean, crisp lines of the architecture with warm, subtle callbacks to traditional farmhouse kitchen design. I couldn’t live without some of the traditional farmhouse elements like a farmhouse white, apron sink and warm wood floors, but I added in modern elements, like big, stainless appliances, matte black finishes and mixing of metals.
